In this post, I am sharing my process in developing ancestral stories with AI assistance. Plus, I have some tips for creating these stories to suit a younger generation of readers. For these, I have developed some cartoon-styled imagery to illustrate.

A Journey from Records to Living Stories

Have you ever stared at a census record and wondered what it would be like to sit across from your ancestor and just... talk? To hear their voice, understand their daily struggles, feel their hopes and fears? That's exactly what happened to me when I discovered Andrew Pillage Allery's story in a local Devon newspaper - a 35-year-old man whose life ended tragically in a dockyard accident in the 1800s.

Suddenly, he wasn't just a name on a death certificate. He was someone's son, someone's hope, someone who woke up that morning not knowing it would be his last.

I tried to imagine what it would be like for his wife and child, as well as his parents, to lose their loved one in such tragic circumstances.

The Challenge We All Face

The breakthrough came when I realised that effective AI collaboration needs four simple elements in every prompt:

Purpose: What are you trying to achieve? ("Help me understand what daily life was like for a chandler in Plymouth")

Details: What specific information do you need? ("Focus on the tools, suppliers, and customer interactions")

Context: Where and when does this fit? ("In 1850s Devon, during the height of maritime trade")

Bringing Devon Ancestors to Life: The Research Process

When I explored Samuel Allery and Alice Pillage's story, I didn't just want to know they were chandlers and innkeepers. I wanted to understand how Samuel's hands felt measuring out candles and rope for ship captains preparing for months at sea. How Alice's voice sounded as she offered weary travellers that final drink before their journey home.

My Quilt Collection

Perhaps I took after this great-grandmother in my quilting days. I have a stack of quilts in a hamper, stored carefully as heirlooms for my granddaughters. These only get an airing when I am displaying them for those interested. I remember taking a selection of them along to a Toastmasters meeting at which I was delivering a speech about the ancient craft. I remember the fabric selection, the planning, the piecing, the stitching, and the quilting that I put into each one.

In my collection, I have large bed-sized quilts and smaller wall hangings. Their themes include traditional Nine-Patch, Lone Star, Album Signature, and Friendship quilts.

My Lone Star quilt with Celtic quilting. I received several small Lone Star quilt patches from my quilting circle, and these were added to this large queen-sized quilt in the 1980s. Now stored in Grandma’s quilt box.

I think I must have spent a small fortune on special quilting fabrics over the years, and I spent many hours on the construction of each quilt. Many of them were given away as baby shower gifts for the babies of my nieces, and I still have plans for the creation of special quilts as gifts for my granddaughters when they marry. (I might have to get started on these real soon.)

My kitchen table was more than a place to eat. It was where magic happened—the quiet kind, passed from mother to daughter without ceremony. With my sleeves rolled up and my hair tied back, I mashed the roots with the heel of a spoon, kneaded the dough until it sighed beneath my hands, and ground dried rose petals into powder between sheets of wax paper.

Widdershins is an old term meaning to move counter-clockwise, anti-clockwise, or in a direction opposite to the usual, specifically, opposite the apparent motion of the sun in the Northern Hemisphere. The word comes from Middle Low German, literally translating to "against the way," and it has deep roots in British and European folklore.

In traditional beliefs, moving widdershins—especially around a sacred place like a church—was thought to bring bad luck or even open portals to other worlds, as seen in stories like “Childe Rowland.” In modern witchcraft and ritual practice, the widdershins movement is often reserved for banishing or undoing actions, symbolising the reversal or breaking of negative influences.

So, in the phrase “don’t stir widdershins,” your mother is reminding you not to stir counter-clockwise—a superstition that echoes old beliefs about luck and the power of ritual direction.

Sunday was our anchor. No matter what the week brought—sore backs from the fields, wet laundry refusing to dry, children squabbling over crusts—we dressed in our best and walked the winding road to St. Saviour’s. Samuel wore his good shirt, collar a little tight. I wore my dark wool gown; the hem was brushed clean and faintly scented with lavender from the drawer.

As we reached the crest, the bells would begin—clear and certain, ringing out across Dartmouth’s rooftops. They called everyone, whether faithful or merely curious, and we all came. Inside, the cool stone walls wrapped around us like old arms. Chapter 5: When the Railway Came
“I feared it would change everything. And it did—some for the better, some not.”

It began as a whisper, really soft and uncertain, passed between women at the market like gossip over apples. Tracks, they said. Steam engines, great iron beasts that would carry people and goods faster than we’d ever imagined. I didn’t believe it, not at first. Totnes was a town of slow steps and sturdy wagons, of Sunday walks and quiet lanes. Not of roaring machines and black smoke.

But soon the men with rolled maps came, pointing at our hills and hedgerows. Then came the others, with picks and hammers and that unrelenting clang that seemed to shake the soil itself. I watched from our lane as trees were felled and earth moved as though it were no more than dust.

Samuel, ever practical, was more hopeful than I. “Might bring more trade,” he said, tugging off his boots by the hearth. I only nodded, my fingers twisting the hem of my apron. I didn’t know what to feel. A part of me understood—easier passage for our wool and cider, quicker trips to market in Exeter or Plymouth. But another part feared it. What would this speed, this noise, bring with it? Would it chase away the stillness I’d grown to love?

The first time I saw the train, I held my shawl tight to my chest as though it might leap from the tracks. It came like thunder—metal screeching, smoke pouring, a black dragon waking from the hills. The children were delighted, of course. Thomas tried to race it, legs flying. Alice asked if it breathed fire. I couldn’t answer. I just watched, heart unsteady.

Change crept in after that, not all at once. The market offered things we’d never seen before—spices, coloured cloth, even tinned meats. New faces appeared at the inn, and new voices echoed in the chapel, asking different questions. Some neighbours packed up and left for jobs farther down the line. I hadn’t thought I’d miss them so keenly, but I did.

In time, I stopped fearing the train. I didn’t love it. But I learned to live with it, the way one lives with wind or winter—knowing you can’t change its coming, only how you stand against it.

Chapter 4: The InnKeeper’s Wife

Do you remember a moment in your life as an Innkeeper’s wife when you felt truly proud?

“I wouldn’t trade that moment for all the fine parlours in Totnes.”

Ah, yes—I do remember. It was the Harvest Fair of ’52, when the Ring o’ Bells was lit up like midsummer and full to bursting. Farmers rolled in with the mud still on their boots, and even the mayor stopped by for a pint of cider and a word with Samuel. The air was thick with tobacco smoke and fiddle tunes, and I had the kitchen running like clockwork—roast joints turning, pasties piping hot, and every table laid with our best linen, which I’d scrubbed white as chapel cloth.

But the proudest moment came not from the bustle, nor the coin in the till, though both were welcome. No—it was when old Mrs. Trudgian, half-blind and near eighty, called me over with a crooked finger. Saturday mornings had a rhythm all their own. I’d tie my bonnet under my chin, swing the empty basket over my arm, and set off while the mists still clung to the hedgerows. The walk into Totnes was quiet save for birdsong, but by the time I reached the square, it buzzed like a hive. I knew who sold the freshest eggs, who might offer a crust of cheese if you asked kindly, and which stall had the softest wool skeins if you didn’t mind a bit of gossip with your purchase.
Market wasn’t just for goods—it was where stories were traded, marriages announced, and weather predicted with a glance at the sky. I bartered firm but fair, swapped bunches of herbs for apples, and sometimes sold my own salves if someone’s cough had lingered. “Madam Goodman,” they’d call me. I liked that. Chapter 1: A Story of Young Marriage

How Harriett became a wife at seventeen and made a life from uncertainty. Harriett married Samuel Goodman in 1834 at St. Saviour’s Church in Dartmouth, Devon.

Cornworthy is a small village in the picturesque and well-wooded valley near the confluence of the Harbourn River with the estuary of the River Dart, SSE of Totnes. Its parish contains 554 inhabitants and 2575 acres of land, including the small hamlets of Allaleigh, East Cornworthy, Tideford, and part of Tuckenhay, where there are quays on the River Harbourn and paper and corn mills in the adjoining parish of Ashprington. The surface is rather hilly, and the soil is generally light and fertile, resting on slate and dunstone and, in some places, on limestone. The land is mostly in tillage but has a fair portion of pasturage and a number of extensive orchards, producing excellent cider.

Significant Homes: Allaleigh House.

Allaleigh House, as the principal dwelling of the hamlet, has roots stretching back to mediaeval times, with a succession of ownership among notable Devon families. Its history is intertwined with the broader story of Allaleigh—a settlement that transitioned from a mediaeval manor and village with industry to a rural hamlet by the 19th century.

Allaleigh - a name that has morphed into Hawley - was home to a locally notorious/famous Dartmouth man, John Hawley. The hamlet, however, retained its name and is still the hamlet of Allaleigh.

Privateer and Pirate:

John Hawley is depicted with his two wives on a huge brass memorial to him in St. Saviour Church close to the quay in Dartmouth.
Hawley was one of the richest and most successful privateers of his era, operating out of Dartmouth. Licenced by the crown to attack enemy ships during the Hundred Years’ War, he often blurred the line between privateering and outright piracy, seizing foreign vessels and their cargoes for profit.

My research today took me on a long and winding road, starting at my grandmother’s front door. I had several small stories about her already written in various formats and with a variety of themes. Today, I wanted to consolidate those into a comprehensive story of Harriet Priscilla (Wright) Allery as a companion piece to the one I created for my grandchildren. That one is called Message from Grandma Harriet, and AI assisted me to write that in her voice and to pass on a legacy to my grandchildren.

When Mary Ann Hall was born on 5 December 1845, her father, Henry, was 41, and her mother, Sarah, was 40. Mary Ann Hall was born in Walworth, London, during a time when the city was growing rapidly, and families like hers navigated crowded streets and changing fortunes. She was baptised just weeks later, on 14 January 1846, affirming her place within the local parish and family traditions.

By the age of six, Mary Ann was living in Southwark St. George, Surrey, recorded in the 1851 census as the daughter of Henry James Hall and Sarah Ann Jones. She grew up in a bustling London neighbourhood, likely contributing to household duties and later learning the skilled trade of tailoring—a common and respectable path for working-class women in Victorian England.

At the age of 15, she was a scholar living in her brother George Hall's residence at 16 Belvedere Place, in the parish of St. George the Martyr, Southwark.

She married Samuel John Allery on 2 December 1867 in England. She was then 22 years old. Their first child, Henry John, arrived just weeks later, born on 31 December 1867 at Arnery Place, Old Kent Road. Mary Ann married a man who shared her London roots and aspirations. Over the next 12 years, Mary Ann gave birth to six children:

• Henry John (1867-1947)

• Rosina Elizabeth (1870-1935)

• Walter Frederick (1871-1915)

• Jessie Amelia (1876-1944)

• George Samuel (1878-1896)

• Jenny Selina (1880-1881)

The growing family moved through various parts of London, including Bermondsey, St. Bride Fleet Street, and Holloway. Amidst the demands of motherhood, Mary Ann worked as a tailoress, as recorded in the 1881 census—sewing likely provided both income and a creative outlet within the home.

But Mary Ann's final years were marked by sorrow. She lost her sister Ann Louisa Hall in 1876, her sister Charlotte Hall in 1879, and her infant daughter Jenny Selina in September 1881. Just weeks later, both of her parents passed away—Henry James Hall in October and Sarah Ann Jones also that same month, though at a distance, in Cheshire.

Mary Ann herself died shortly thereafter, on 19 December 1881, on Waterloo Road, Surrey, at the young age of 36. In a single year, the Hall family suffered a cascade of losses, with Mary Ann's death closing a chapter heavy with grief and resilience.
