Now that the April Challenge has concluded, I can reflect on what I knew on April 1 and what I now know on May 1.

1. I needed to be better prepared. (Note to self: when you sign up for things like this, Carole, ensure that you are aware of all the parameters.)

2. I was disciplined enough to maintain a regular blog posting regime each day (except Sunday). It helped to just list the A to Z Challenge at the top of each page in my desk diary.

3. I learned how to structure and create the posts using the help of AI. Claude Sonnet was particularly helpful, providing suggested titles, outlines, and case studies on my theme of AI in Genealogy.

4. I began to prepare each post the night before and then continued to refine and weave my genealogy research case studies into the post each morning.

5. I grew in confidence in posting about my favourite theme and knowing that others found the posts interesting, enlightening, intriguing, and inspiring. Now that all are in place, I look back with pride on a job well done - challenge completed.

Has the #AtoZChallenge 2025 helped you to feel like a successful blogger?

Yes! A resounding yes to this question. For the first time in a long time with blogging, I was getting multiple likes and comments on my blog posts every day. I felt that the content, format, and context of my posts improved over the month. My theme was the ‘A to Z of AI in Genealogy’, which I thought would prove to be engaging given the chatter about AI in Genealogy in many social media spheres.

Naturally, I needed to focus on a myriad of topics within that theme, and I opted to set up a conversation thread with Claude Sonnet - my favourite creative writing assistant. The very first prompt was:

Claude responded with a list of 27 titles from which I could pick and choose. Here’s a sample of those.

I stuck to the first 5 titles, and from then on, I made some decisions about changing the topics for the others. I needed to feel confident that I could talk about each topic and include some of my own case studies.

Now I have 26 posts, each of considerable length and rich with educational and entertaining content. Tips and case studies were used throughout the series, and later in the month, I matched the case studies to actual research projects I was working on. This enabled me to focus on getting forward momentum with my research whilst providing candid case studies for the posts.

Did you support other #AtoZChallenge 2025 bloggers?

Yes, I found a few of my genealogy friends were also engaged in the challenge, so I made it a daily plan to like and comment as often as I could in their Substack posts. This process kept it manageable for the month and did not overwhelm, leading me to finish the challenge with ease.

I watched, listened, and learned as I read the other blog posts on genealogy topics. My main followers on Substack may have liked my posts, however, it was a discreet group of commenters who provided me with the feedback I was looking for. Therefore, I chose to support just five or six of these challenge participants - this cemented our growing acknowledgment of each other’s posts. An encouragement in itself.

Is the #AtoZChallenge neighborhood blogging community good for your mental health?

To be honest, I had not delved into the community and was not aware of how that might be good for my mental health. Today, I went over to the #AtoZChallenge website and saw that it was frequented by a myriad of bloggers on a myriad of themes.

I found the experience to be a steep learning curve, even from an experienced blogger, as there were many facets to the challenge that I had not really understood. But, that is only causing some negative thoughts today as I realise my errors and naivete.

But the good thing is I now have a greater awareness of the #AtoZChallenge and will be more prepared next time round.

As for my mental health, it is still intact!

How could the team make this blog hop better for next year?

Did they have a mailing list that I could have signed up for? Not sure, I do know that when I filled in the participation form, I had put in my regular blog page, instead of my new Substack blog page. Oh No! Doh! Now I realise that the rest of the 172 people on that list had not been able to access my A to Z posts. So I guess, a lesson learned for me to get more followers, make sure I have the correct URL listed. (I had forgotten about the Master List, so I did not go back to that to find links to others in the 2025 challenge. Now that I look again, I have found others who were blogging about genealogy - fabulous. Perhaps I can focus on their April posts during May.)

In hindsight, I found this blog post from the team on N-Neighbourhood Community to be most helpful. (And now, as I dig deeper, I find the AtoZ Challenge Facebook Community where all of their April A to Z posts are displayed. Must bookmark this site and plan to frequent it in 2016.)

Finding Patterns in the Stars of Family History

As we reach the final letter in our A to Z journey through AI in genealogy, it seems fitting to look to the stars—not for astrological guidance, but for a framework to understand the unique constellation of patterns that define each family across generations.

Just as ancient cultures gazed upward and found recurring celestial patterns they called the zodiac, family historians can now use artificial intelligence to identify the distinctive patterns of traits, tendencies, and timing that create our family's unique signature through time.

I call this concept the "Family Zodiac"—and no, I haven't gone all mystical in my final blog post! This isn't about whether your ancestors were stubborn Tauruses or dramatic Leos. Instead, it's about recognising that every family has its special constellation of recurring patterns that, when mapped, reveal the distinctive character of your lineage.

To organise these patterns, I've created a framework that playfully borrows from astrological "houses" while providing a practical structure for understanding different dimensions of your family history:

AI: Your Personal Astrologer (But Much More Reliable!)

Now, I'm not suggesting you consult AI the way some might visit an astrologer! But artificial intelligence does have an almost magical ability to detect patterns across massive amounts of family data—patterns that would take humans years to identify.

Here's how AI can help you map your own family zodiac:

Case Study 1: Temporal Patterns

I recently asked my AI assistant to analyse birth months across my family tree and discovered something I'd never noticed: a significant clustering of May births in my maternal line, including my great-grandmother Mary Ann Evans, born May 1833 in Haverfordwest, Wales.

What made this discovery particularly meaningful was the realisation that I, too, was born in May, creating a birthday connection that spans nearly two centuries. When viewed through the lens of the Family Zodiac, this becomes one thread in the unique temporal pattern of our family.

The AI suggested this might reflect agricultural cycles in rural Wales, traditional marriage timing (with August-September weddings leading to May births), or perhaps a self-reinforcing family tradition. I've found that discovering these patterns transforms genealogy from a collection of facts into a meaningful narrative. When I realised that my family showed a strong pattern in the Transformation House (Scorpio)—repeatedly rebuilding after significant setbacks—it helped me understand not just what happened to my ancestors, but the resilience that defined them across generations.

Similarly, noticing that certain family branches showed strong patterns in the Exploration House (Sagittarius) while others dominated in the Resource House (Taurus) helped me appreciate the diverse strengths that different lineages contributed to our shared heritage.

Early this morning, I was pondering over what to write for X on day 28 of this challenge. I asked for some ideas from Claude, and this one resonated with me:

The Initial Research Situation

When researching the Goodall family tragedy, I initially focused on Richard Edward Goodall, his wife Clara Jane Camp, and their children. The 1901 census showed them living at 1 Archer Street in St. Pancras with their children Florence (11), Edith Alberta (8), James Edward (3), and Mildred Catherine (1½). Also listed in the household was a boarder named Harry King, age 40, who was working as a coal porter.

This information seemed straightforward—a working-class family with a boarder taking in lodgers to supplement their income, a common practice in Victorian London. The focus of my research naturally centred on Richard's crime, institutionalisation, and the fate of Clara and her surviving daughter, Florence.

The AI-Facilitated Discovery

Days later, when I uploaded the 1911 census information to their family archive, an AI pattern recognition system flagged something interesting that I had overlooked. In the 1911 census, Clara Goodall was living at 31 Hargrave Park, Upper Holloway, with her daughter Florence, Florence's infant son Edward George, and Henry King, now listed not as a boarder but as Clara's brother.

The AI system, analysing subtle patterns across the census records, highlighted several points:

1. The shift in relationship status from "boarder" to "brother"

2. The similarity in age and birthplace between Harry King (1901) and Henry King (1911)

3. Phonetic and nickname variations between "Harry" and "Henry"

4. The continued presence in the household even after the family tragedy

Uncovering a Lifelong Family Connection

When I added the 1939 Register to my research collection, the AI's pattern recognition became even more valuable. This document revealed Clara—now remarried and known as Clara Pursey—living as an old-age pensioner with her brother Harry King (also an old-age pensioner) in the household of her daughter Florence Williams and her family. Harry is listed as a widower, and Clara as a widow.

This discovery illuminated a remarkable multi-decade family support network. Harry/Henry King wasn't merely a temporary boarder or even just a supportive brother during a crisis—he was a constant presence throughout Clara's life, staying with her through

I now have some vital records regarding Richard’s time at Broadmoor Lunatic Asylum and have been able to synthesise and summarise with the help of Ms Perplexity. These have now been added to the ongoing article called:

Note: the PDF records obtained from the Royal Berkshire Archives could not be transcribed accurately by either Claude or ChatGPT. Instead, I used Perplexity. That seems fitting as it was Perplexity who gave me the link to the Archives.

Note: WeAre provides me with an easy method of adding to the article as my research expands. I simply add a new section, add the Title style to its heading, and it is automatically included in the Table of Contents at the top of the Article.

Further research into the Regent Canal Tragedy has taken me to some really useful websites to find out more about Richard Edward Goodall, and AI has prompted me to deepen my investigation into ‘what happened to his wife Clara and daughter Florence after the tragic event of 1901.

Every genealogist has experienced that moment—staring at a faded photograph of an ancestor standing before their home, reading a description of the village they left behind, or examining a ship's manifest documenting their ocean crossing—when we wish we could step through time to witness their lives firsthand. While physical time travel remains the realm of science fiction, artificial intelligence is now creating remarkably close approximations, allowing us to virtually walk the paths our ancestors trod and experience aspects of their world that were previously left to imagination.

I wish I could walk in my Welsh ancestors' footsteps again. My ancestral trails would begin in Pembrokeshire with these towns and villages: Haverfordwest, Sutton, Treffgarne, Tenby, where my Evans family travelled. I would visit the places familiar to them 200 years ago and experience those same sights, smells, and sounds of rural life. What I would prefer is the ability to time travel and be in these places at the same time as they lived.

In this episode of the A to Z challenge, I will be discussing how ChatGPT, my chosen AI assistant for time travel, has helped me develop some ancestral trails for my English ancestors. You may recall the Goodall family and Edith Ann Robinson from previous episodes; I am continuing their stories by prompting ChatGPT to time travel with me.

ChatGPT’s response for the specific area of Enfield, in England, in 1901 was incredibly useful to help guide my next research. I was able to uncover several rich resources that were relevant to the new urban development area of Enfield.

The most useful of these proved to be the Enfield Society publications, which provided me with photographs and incredibly detailed explanations of the historical photographs

I also perused the Francis Frith collection of photos of Enfield in this era to get a birds-eye view of the town, the streets, and the markets. All of these images are copyrighted and very expensive to buy. However, you too can view them online.

Case Study - Part 2: ChatGPT helps with sensory immersion

I wanted to find out more about the likely soundscape, weather patterns, and daily rhythms for Ponders End, where my ancestors migrated to during the building boom of the early 1900s.

ChatGPT provided a wonderful, sensory-filled opening segment for the piece about Ernest James Goodall. The names of the companies Rice and Son, Stockswell Builders, were extracted from the 1921 census record for Ernest. The names of the streets were extracted from the PDF documents from the Enfield Society. The context is provided by the descriptions of ‘a day in the life of’ as I requested.

Here is the second part of the story focussing on Elizabeth.

These will provide me with further elements of the story I am creating for Ernest James Goodall, ‘The Builder’s Legacy’. These responses from ChatGPT have been brilliant. They have a different style and flair from those of Claude, but have provided a new perspective for me in writing Ernest’s story with visual and sensory adaptations of scenes and subplots.

This process enables me to virtually walk the paths my ancestors trod and experience aspects of their world that were previously left to imagination.

Every genealogist has encountered those seemingly impenetrable family mysteries—the ancestor who vanishes from records, conflicting evidence about parentage, or migration patterns that defy explanation. These complex puzzles require sophisticated reasoning, methodical analysis, and creative problem-solving. The latest advancements in AI, particularly the new reasoning models in ChatGPT and Claude, are transforming how genealogists approach these challenging research problems.

Goodall Case Study

Today, I have been testing Claude’s reasoning model called ‘Extended Thinking’ to unravel an ancestral mystery for my Goodall Family research. I have threaded my process, prompts, and responses within this post to illustrate the difference it makes when using a reasoning model. Below is my opening prompt; I uploaded the census records and marriage records, and requested the ‘extended thinking’ option.

Its comprehensive response began like this:

After reading the first response from Claude, I focussed on a particular ‘chain of thought’ that might prove useful.

First, I returned to my copy of the Broadmoor Asylum Admission record to double-check the dates of admission and death.

Focussing on the Date of Discharge or Death column, I deciphered that Richard died on 2 Sep 1913. Now I had a span of years for his time in Broadmoor, and added another prompt for Claude to reason with.

Continuing my research for evidence of Richard Edward Goodall, I used a few of these suggested tasks.

The next thing to do was to investigate Newspaper reports for the time period of 1901-1913 for Richard Edward Goodall. One new article from the Evening Standard, · Friday, September 05, 1913, was revealed. A breakthrough and a final epitaph for Richard.

Richard’s suicide marked a sad and tragic ending to his life and this story. I noted that because Richard was in a ‘privilege block’, he was not searched. Therefore, he was able to bring that ‘sharp steel’ into his room to cut his own throat. I noted that there had been a previous suicide attempt nine years prior. And remembering back to the Regent Canal Tragedy, he had reportedly attempted to drown himself after killing his three children. So that makes this the third suicide attempt, successful. I was keen to see what ‘reasoning’ Claude might do with this new research.

Claude’s response to this prompt enables me to locate the website for the Royal Berkshire Archive, where Broadmoor documentation is archived. I was able to contact them about access to ‘patient records’ that are now over 100 years old. Whilst there, I found a podcast called ‘Broadmoor Revealed’ - a most interesting talk by Mark Stevens, the author of the book of the same name. This website provided the full transcript. To get a summary of that, I used Descript. First, download the MP3 file of the podcast and upload it to Descript, then request a Summary. See below.

To make the most of these powerful AI capabilities:

Comparing AI Tools with One Universal Prompt

Introduction

Welcome to Day 18 of the April Challenge A to Z AI in Genealogy series, where I am focusing on many and varied aspects of this topic for beginners and advanced users. Today, I am taking a practical view of how different AI tools respond to identical prompts and highlighting the AI tool differences for effective genealogy use. The goal is to help genealogists evaluate and choose the right AI platform for specific genealogy tasks, with one prompt to ‘rule them all.’

Note: One of my most popular YouTube videos from 2024 was this one, ‘One Prompt to Rule Them All.’ It contained a ‘universal prompt generator’ that I have adapted for genealogists.

Case Study: Face-off - ChatGPT and Claude Sonnet (new video coming soon)

The amended prompt that I used to test the responses from ChatGPT and Claude included references to ‘genealogical needs,’ ‘Genealogy Assistant,’ and ‘genealogy research. ’

After answering question 1, each provided me with a draft prompt. ChatGPT and Claude.

The section 3 follow-up questions varied between the two AI tools. ChatGPT was a little more long-winded in this department, whereas Claude was more succinct. The questions took me on slightly different journeys and the end results were quite engaging.

After completing the iterative process with both ChatGPT and Claude Sonnet, here are the two Revised Prompts.

My collection of inherited or gifted ancestral artefacts, is small. I have a small 1944 diary, a cache of black and white photos, a memoir, and a small bundle of letters. I have worked with others who have, enviably, inherited box loads of memorabilia. I have dabbled in archiving and deciphering several handwritten documents of one kind or another, including a War Diary that captured a soldier's experience in WW1. The process then was arduous, pre-AI tools. Now the process is made simple with AI tools.

AI Tools for Deciphering Ancestral Documents

Every genealogist knows the feeling—the thrill of discovering an ancestor's will, a family Bible record, or a stack of old letters, followed quickly by the challenge of actually reading them. Spidery handwriting, faded ink, unfamiliar abbreviations, and archaic language can transform promising documents into frustrating puzzles. Thankfully, artificial intelligence is revolutionizing how we decipher these precious ancestral documents, making previously inaccessible family information available to researchers at all skill levels.

Following up on my research into the Angell Estate, as made infamous by William Adrian Allery, the first genealogist in my family; I discovered the Will of John Angell. I was then facing a huge challenge in deciphering this old famous Will. Luckily the hard task of transcribing had already been done and was available online.

AI Techniques for Extracting Family History

Historical newspapers represent one of genealogy's richest yet most challenging resources. Within their yellowed pages lie birth announcements, wedding details, obituaries, social events, business activities, and countless other glimpses into our ancestors' lives. However, the sheer volume of newspaper content has traditionally made comprehensive research prohibitively time-consuming. Artificial intelligence is now transforming how genealogists approach these valuable archives, making it possible to uncover family narratives that might otherwise remain hidden in the newsprints of the past.

My Newspaper Research Challenge

While researching my ancestors in the newspapers of their time, I have uncovered a treasure trove of insights into their lives. The biggest haul I have uncovered relates to my great-grand-uncle, William Adrian Allery. A myriad of newspaper articles tell the story of his efforts to claim inheritance to the Angell Estate millions in London. The last time I looked, there were over 145 articles in the British newspapers in 1924 and still more in 1928 and 1929. From these I pieced together a story of ‘The Devon Kinkeeper’ and you can find that here.

The biggest part of this challenge was knowing which of the articles to use in the book, and how to blend them into the text. This was written in 2019, so before AI tools were available. I know now how I would approach the task of analysing and transcribing a batch of newspaper articles like the ones I used in the book. AI tools will save so much time.

Here is the obituary for William Adrian Allery as reported in the Daily Herald on 21 March 1929 and its transcription by Claude Sonnet.

In fact, all four dot points from above were evident in these articles and became much clearer with AI transcriptions and commentary. They form a sad epitaph for the last five years of the life of this old gentleman, the first serious genealogist in my Allery family.

Whether our ancestors crossed oceans, continents, or simply moved from one county to another, understanding these journeys offers profound insights into family decisions, historical forces, and the resilience that shaped generations to come. Following the migration story of one of my Welsh ancestors recently was aided by the use of my AI tools, Perplexity and Claude Sonnet. Together we were able to rise to the migration analysis challenge and track the movements of Thomas Hugh Savage and his family.

Migration records showed that Thomas appeared in Canada by 1925. Emily Wilkinson, his wife-to-be, traveled to Canada in 1924 on board the SS Montclare. A simple migration narrative might connect these two points directly.

Beyond Names and Dates: The Context Challenge

Traditional genealogical research excels at establishing the basic framework of ancestors' lives—when they were born, whom they married, where they lived, and when they died. But these facts alone can't help us understand what shaped their decisions, what challenges they faced, or how they experienced the world around them.

Consider the difference between these two statements:

1. "Thomas Hugh Savage migrated to Canada in 1925."

2. "Thomas Hugh Savage moved from Treffloyne Farm in Pembrokeshire, Wales, to Saint John, New Brunswick, Ontario, Canada, in 1925, during the height of the 'Roaring Twenties.'’ This was after the Harvester Scheme, an incentive generated by the Empire Settlement Act of 1922, so what enticed him?”

The second statement places Thomas’s migration within its historical context, immediately raising questions about his motivations, political beliefs, and the risks he was willing to take. This context transforms a simple fact into a window into character and circumstance.

My prompt generated a summarised list of reasons for migration and provided a total of 19 sources. Websites and PDFs with a wealth of stories and articles to build my knowledge of the ‘Great Migration.’

2. Personalized Context Generation - Creating tailored context based on geography, period, occupation, social class, religion, ethnicity, gender, and age

3. Multi-dimensional Analysis: Exploring intersections between economic conditions, political developments, technological changes, and cultural shifts

4. Visual and Narrative Context - Describing typical homes, clothing, daily routines, and sensory experiences of historical environments

Note: Using traditional research methods, I recently discovered migration papers (passenger lists, ocean arrivals lists) for both Thomas Savage and Emily Wilkinson, who later became his wife. These gave me vital clues as to the specific destinations of the couple as they sailed from England to Canada and back again (several ocean voyages). One of these was useful in solving the mystery of the couple’s home address on their return to Canada in 1933.

I did not know this place, Noranda, Quebec, which was noted in the passenger list for the Savage family sailing on the Duchess of Richmond in 1933. However, I now had a full address to work with.

Another prompt for Perplexity gave me a wealth of detail about the town of Noranda and how it was built for the mining industry in 1926. From one of the links provided, I found a map displaying 8th Street (shown as 8th Rue at marker 11).

Note: Perplexity certainly helped me understand Thomas Savage’s new occupation as a hoistman in the mining industry, giving rise to this question:
”Did Thomas Savage work for the Noranda Mines? If so, which one in particular? Was it the Horne Mine?” A new research strategy is required for this.

As AI technology continues to evolve, we can look forward to increasingly detailed visual reconstructions, greater local specificity, more diverse perspectives, and interactive exploration of historical contexts.
